I get the feeling that far too often do people not take me seriously, and that far too often I give them plenty of good reasons for that behavior.

We all play the role of idiot sometimes. When you're with a certain group of people you automatically become the butt of all the jokes. All of a sudden you've got an arbitrary label of dorky, or immature, or "idiot" or whatever, and even though it's all in jest you suddenly start playing your role to fit their definition of you. Even though it wasn't true at all to start with, you're now setting up the background for their punchlines all on your own for acceptance or attention or who knows what.
In short, don't do it. Don't let people make you into someone you don't want to be. Be serious and mature when you feel like it, don't play along with their jokes, and don't ever lessen yourself as a person for the sake of others. No matter how often it's said it remains true: if people won't accept you for who you are then they aren't really your friends and you shouldn't even be spending time with them.
