I'm giving myself away with this post, but too bad.

Have you guys heard of the teenage boy who's being charged with second degree murder because he supplied the drugs to a girl who died over an overdose?

Yeah. Think of that next time you decide that doing drugs is so damn cool.

I don't think we'll get any stoners-in-training trying to comment on this one like we did the last time drugs were brought up. The dangers are there, the consequences are staring them in the face, but they're still willing to trade the rest of their lives for a few minutes minutes of fleeting pleasure and a momentary disconnect from reality.

I can't think of anything sadder.

I removed my posts 'cause while I do support legalization of many drugs I don't want to sound like I condone drug dealers. The whole point of my view on legalizing it is to get rid of such shady characters.

I don't like the extra laws that make them punishable under 2nd degree murder and such, but I don't really want them getting off scot free either, because they are really increasing the problem.

is this the case by any chance?

Yes, that's my best friend's neighbor. Isn't it crazy?

Why do I care?! Oh, I don't know. Maybe because I knew the girl who died. But you're right. I shouldn't care. ...Right.

Anyway. No, the case I'm talking about is on the front page of today's N&O.

I'm sorry about your loss, but that doesn't change my opinion. Mixing drugs and ODing is a sign of a more serious problem than occasional use.

As I said before, I don't condone drugs in the least. But having an attitude of "drugs and the people who do them are stupid" just pushes the problem further down. Instead of saying "it's stupid because you're just trying to be cool," why not actually try to help the person who's using in a productive manner?

I say this as a person with two alcoholic parents, who abused marijuana, alcohol, and pills from the time I was 11 to 14, and who now helps other teens who have substance abuse problems. CRITICIZING DOES NOT HELP THE PROBLEM, IT MAKES IT WORSE! The more shame someone feels for something, the more it becomes hidden. So stop bitching and do something constructive about it.

(Not to get personal) But maybe if someone had told your parents that drug use was a bad idea and shown them examples of how it could hurt them and the people around them like the OP is trying to do, they might have made a different decision back then. I think the OP was just directing this post to all the teens out there (and there are plenty of them) who think there are absolutely no consequences to drug use.

Along with stricter enforcement and counseling programs we need friends telling friends that drugs are risky and a bad idea so maybe we can stop this problem before it starts. Maybe drug users -should- be somewhat ashamed and understand the inherent dangers of their problem. If they have to wait for someone to get hurt before they understand that drugs are risky, then it might be too late for them to work for positive changes in their life.

Okay, I see where you're coming from, second-to-last anonymous. Maybe I should have been a little clearer-- like the last anonymous pointed out, I was more addressing those who think that drug use/distribution has no consequences.
