First thing - relax. Stop freaking out. It's not that big an issue.

Use whatever tampons you want, though I suggest the unscented ones - they're supposed to be less irritating. Also, they smell less gross afterwards. As for size, start with the smallest you can find. And if this is the girst time you're using a tampon, get the kind with an applicator.

Change your tampon every 4 to 6 hours. Don't leave it in for more than 8 because that puts you at risk for Toxic Shock Syndrome. But really, stick closer to the four. The more you change your tampon, the less likely it is that there will be a leak.

Use pads at night. You should be sleeping more than 6 hours, so it's definitely pads at night.

As always, my recommendation is looking at Scarleteen and perusing your options.

Pshh.

The risk of getting tss is like 1/1,000,000.

I wear my tampons overnight, pads are sick.

And don't change your tampon earlier than four hours. Seriously. It can tear the walls of your vagina and cause infection.

anon 2: stop being immature

I suggest getting tampax, the box with like 3 different sizes, so that you can find what suits you. If it's your first time then use one at the end of your period so that you can get comfertable with them with a small size.

I use them overnight and it has never really been a problem, and now that I use tampons I can't use pads because they are, for lack of better terms, icky.

I use tampons overnight without a problem. If you're going to be sleeping more than ten hours though, be careful. Pads just gross me out and leak too much to use them regularly.

Also, it's important to learn how to judge your flow. Graphic, I know. But really, if you have a heavy flow day, you should use something like a super/super plus tampon to prevent leaks. But if you're on your last day and not too heavy of a flow, a super plus will cause dryness and possible infection..not to mention being uncomfortable as hell.

I use the Beyond tampons (I can't remember if it's Tampax or Playtex..) They're tapered so they're more comfortable for insertion, but cardboard applicators so you can flush them most places. They also come in multi packs of different absorbencies.

Most importantly: Don't Panic. It's ok. Periods happen. If you're just starting, don't be worried if it's not regular for a while. Just keep tampons on your person in case it comes unexpectedly.

I don't have to deal with pads or tampons for the time being. BC that eliminates periods FTW.

Being a guy eliminates periods rather effectively as well.

Of course... being a guy comes with its own baggage...

Hah-hah, boners!

*takes this as a chance to act really immaturely, singing "girls rule, boys drool"*

BONERS!

yea sometimes we really can't control them anymore than girls can control their periods. Atleast girls can always predict when they have their periods. to guys, that can happen at like any time w/out warning

Is there a reason why you can't ask your mom about this stuff? She really is your best bet for advice because period problems (ie. cramps, irregularities)tend to be genetic. It's nothing to be embarressed about - really, be happy! Good luck!
Also <3 hannah. Boners really ARE funny.

You know what, though? I would rather have a boner than a period any day.

^ I second that, plus you can get rid of boners.

^You can get rid of periods too.

^^ well u can just mentally get rid of boners, but getting rid of periods involves drugs... unless u get pregnant

It's true, you can't just think about baseball and magically make your periods disappear.
