The "shift" is how long that particular player has been on the ice. In hockey, everyone except the goalie plays in shifts that rotate so the players stay fresh. Shifts range in time depending on the player and how good they are. You play your shift, head back to the bench, and rest until your next shift.

They've been tracking shifts for the key players - the play makers. Brind'amour and Staal are the Canes players being timed. It's Pronger for the Oilers.

Captains are Rod Brind'amour and Jason Smith.
