I sometimes forget I have a boyfriend. He's so much a part of my life that I take him for part of the background noise.

I don't know if this means I should marry him (that's what marriage is, right?) or leave him...

As awful as it is to forget you have someone, not having him would break me.

...I love him, I think...

Stay with him. If he's that much a part of you, why cut him away? And if you two remain as close as this a few years down the road, then by all means, marry.

Ah, but this I think is real love. Real love is indeed not necessarily the fires of lust and romance, but again, this attachment to him that you seem to feel. Do not confuse this with being clingy or obsessed, but do recognize that this happens quite often, although generally it takes a bit longer for this to happen.

At the same time, being part of the "background noise" bespeaks itself to the great problem of loving that most people have. You may tell yourself you love him... but placing him as something you take for granted is not complimentary, nor does it connotate an atmosphere in which you are showing this person you love them, you are only thinking it... and as we all know, we are only as good as our actions.

All great loves need a little friction, a little abrasion to keep the spark going. If things aren't interesting or thrilling anymore is -this- really something you're willing to settle for?
