I wish life was like a mosh pit. No matter how hard you fall, there's always someone to pick your ass back up and toss you right back into the mayhem.

I hate the kids that, when you're trying to get out, think it's funny to push you back in.

Or stomp you to death.

Thats... extremely philosophical and somewhat poetical...

^_^ My heavy metal intellectual boyfriend is gonna love that quote.

Heavy metal intellectual?

I don't think that's even possible.

hey tinted, don't be passing judgements ;) I know a couple of said "heavy metal intellectuals".
But, as to that quote being extremely philosophical/poetical? I think not.
My life is like that though, and I'm sorry the OP's isn't.

The boyfriend is an Aeronautics Engineer at State, he's smart enough. He goes to Oz fest every year. This weekend in point of fact. I think that counts for both categories.

As for poetry? Ah, beauty in the eye of the beholder I suppose.

Being an aeronautics engineer in no way makes one an intellectual. He may be quite intelligent and bright, but that is not an intellectual. Someone who is gets an A in a difficult mathetmatics course is not necessarily an intellectual.

Intellectualism is not only a state of mind, but also a way of life. It implies one who is cultured and is able to discuss and understand many things in-depth, and create their own interesting conjectures.

Due to the violent nature of heavy-metal, and the inherently simple rhythmic and (often) nonexistent melodic strains, heavy-metal is not intellectual. By definition.

Metal is arguably the closest genre to classical music there is. Listen to a band like Cradle of Filth which uses full orchestras and Gregorian chants, or Dimmu Borgir which is amazing with synths...good metal is complex as hell. And even those bands that are more simple can be melodic and introspective..case in point Lacuna Coil, In Flames, etc. Anyone who went to Ozzfest this weekend would have been blown away by Black Label Society.

And why can't violent music be intellectual? Expressing violent feelings through art isn't intellectual? Man, then I guess the German Expressionists were dumbasses. Besides, not all metal is violent and not all violent music is non-intellectual.

Don't judge a band by its stage makeup. Because I know for a fact you've never listened to good metal.

You have made a strong argument that the heavy metal genre is the closest genre in similarity to classical music.

You have made a strong argument that violent music is the expression of feelings - emotional, if you will.

What you have not done (and cover with rampant emotion and rhetorical questioning) is support your implied argument that heavy metal music is intellectual.

By definition, intellectual status is granted to a subject "involving intelligence rather than emotions or instinct." If anything, you have strongly supported the argument against the status of heavy metal as an intellectual genre.

Now granted, it takes intelligence to write music of most sorts, or to choose the proper songwriter to ensure quality in the genre of choice. However, that reflects not on the nature of the material produced.

Intellectual (music/people/etc) promote the use of logical, intelligent reasoning when examining a subject. With the acknowledged violent (or depressed, moody, or single-track) bias, the heavy-metal genre, by its very nature, cannot be percieved as an intellectual subject.

from what i understand einstein was a total headbanger

and arguably is completly right heavy metal is no where near classical
Also i like that this conversaation has turned so far from the original point. which is actually about the merits of mosh pits. personally i really like them, you can get into a crazed frenzy just by jumping around its really quite fun.

i actually hate heavy metal a lot.
and i don't hate a lot of things...
but seriously, what is the point even?
and i fail to see the connection with classical music. with the examples you used i could easily say that ANY kind of music is like classical... but whatever, i'm feeling mean and it's not your fault
