everyone has "real"problems, your problems my be different than my problems but that doesn't make either of ours any less real.

say 'clare' was walking down the street and she got swept up in a wave of people and they all went down a smallish alley, a place she'd walked a thousand times before. anyway this time she starts panicing, she's claustrophobic and she cant get out.

thats just as real a fear as 'bob's' fear of snakes

you could say that bob's fear is more "real" because claustrophobia is less concreate an idea. but both fears are extreamly real

the same goes for problems.

so i suggest you realize people who cut aren't just "cutters" but real people trying to deal with real problems. maybe its not healthy and we all wish they'd stop for there saftey but all the same the are just another person like you are

there problems are just as real as yours are.
and yours are just as real as theres are.

good god
you're both idiots

Claustrophobia and a fear of snakes really have nothing to do with cutting. Not everyone has real problems. I know plenty of people who are just fine.
I understand the OPs sentiments that most cutters are not living in a third world country trying to support a family of 18, half of whom are dying from AIDs. But self mutilation comes from a lot of different and also real problems, for example sexual or other physical abuse, extreme pressure from family or friends to be perfect, divorce, death, or anything else that could be extremely traumatic for a "middle class person." People who self mutilate do it to bring them down from a state of emotional mania. They can't even feel it. You have no idea what that is like. Often they have difficulty dealing with their real problems due to chemical imbalances, and they really need help/medication.

also anon1, it's namaste. and why would you bow with respect to a person you completely disagree with?

It's "namaste." Not nameste.

OP, people generally don't cut over concrete problems, rather psychological ones. just like the cutting only solves anything in your head, the problems you're trying to deal with are mostly in your head. but that doesn't make them any less real. as a former cutter, i can say from experience that this is true. and don't start on that shit about cutting creating more problems, because while that's true in the long run, at the time it helps a lot. or at least it did for me.

ps thanks to anon2 for knowing what they're talking about.

^ No, cutting does not solve anything. The feeling of release or euphoria you get while cutting is completely false and the cuts only cause infection, bloodloss, and scars that you'll have to explain to future friends, family, and lovers. In addition, after cutting, most people feel intensely guilty about their actions, only worsening the psychological conditions that drove the person to cut in the first place. Cutting is bad for the short term and the long term. If you cut, you need to find help. You need to stop.

Yes, my first reaction to the cutters I've known has been "OMG you stupid fuck how could you do something so fucking STUPID!?" And, yeah, cutting is a stupid way to deal with real emotional problems. But so is excessive drinking, and no one shouts at alcholics "You moron! Get some real problems!" Cutters, like alcoholics, have real problems. Yeah, so they're not usually living in a shack under a bridge or trying to survive on $7 a week, but the fact remains that people who cut have stress in their lives that they are doing a really fuckin' bad job of dealing with, and they need someone to help them/slap them in the metaphorical face to get them to solve their real problems in some real way, instead of treating self-mutilation like generic-brand Prozac.

It's absolutely stupid to cut, but the people who do usually do it because of real anxiety, be it school- or family- or work-related. I hope they're wise enough to see how stupid they're being about their problems before they do something even more stupid, like suicide.

OP, I'd love to see your stats on cutters and their socioeconomic status.

Why don't you yell at anorexics for their distorted mental perception? Why don't you tell alcoholics to get a grip? How about people with chronic depression, just tell them to get over themselves. And you know, manic depressives to stop being so dramatic.

I talk to my psychaiatrist about these things all the time, they aren't stupid middle class afflictions, they're PROBLEMS. How about you consult someone who has actually studied the subject instead of forming uninformed opinions.
