You could always ask them.
I don't want to accidentally come off as desperate or overly agressive (not that I support gender stereotypes). And maybe I don't want to get rejected either, and draw myself into a heap of awkwardness or embarrassment.
Get over-excited friends to ask people for you and then pretend you had nothing to do with it.
