People are selfish. We can only focus on one important thing at a time. Why is it that that is always the self?

Sometime's it isn't.
People are actually whizzes at juggling all sorts of important obligations and duties. We have to pay attention to our parents, our friends, our teachers, our future, our Id, and ourselves. Often personal ambition and goals often float to the top, but what's so evil about that? I'm an individual being. This isn't some ant colony. I'm the only one staring out of these eyes, and the work that comes out of these hands should first and foremost serve the guy they're attached to.
Because we are the only thing we really have.
Well, you'll find that isn't true in all parts of the world, but the "self" is particularly prominent in the United States.
Individualism is a breeding ground for narcissism if not tempered with reason.
