Hi, Holden. How are the rest of the Caulfields doing?

And did the school ever replace the fencing equipment?

People can't be fake, they just Are. If they happen to choose "a face to meet the faces that we meet" that's their perogative and that's what makes them themselves. If a person actually existed that had one unalterable personality they'd be boring and damn near socially unacceptable.

There are some people out there who seem just plain insincere, but that's just becasue they haven't learned the complex art of faking sincerity. Once you've got that you've got everything.

(Ever notice how mediocre acting kids are really creepy and "fake" all the time, but prefoessionals are the nicest people you've ever met? My point exactly.)

We all conform to some extent to help us fit in with our surroundings and help society flow seemlessly.

I agree it's bad when people conform to the extent that they hate who they are but at the same time can't seem to make themselves change, but I believe that applying that term to "everyone" seems to be a bit of an overstatement.

This reminds me of an essay we did multiple choice for AP english about how gentlemen are often mistaken for being good people. It talked about how being a gentleman is a matter of learning and not a matter of being a good person.

The facades we put up can be used for good or ill and I feel applying the negative connotation the word "fakeness" applies to these is innappropriate.

teenagers will often seem more "fake" to each other simply because their identities are still relatively fluid in comparison to older people.

I'm in style and I hate it. I wish I could dress in the rags of Truth and Reality. I wish I could be Genuine.

I know what you mean, OP.

This is the kind of statement Andy Warhol would have made.
