No, you should have taken Latin.

Quidquid Latine dictum sit, altum videtur.

Why? Spanish is much more useful than French (in the United States at least. Not so much in Canada...)

Spanish is more useful than French in the United States, specifically, but not so much in the rest of the world.

Maybe that's what the OP means:

he or she wanted to take french, but took spanish instead for simply practical reason and now regrets not following what he or she wanted to do.

EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE FOR ME. I spent all of high school kicking myself for not taking spanish and being too much of a wuss/grade-mongerer to switch out of my higher-level french class.

In college, however, I've decided to take Chinese.

Exactly at what matthew said. Who gives a shit if a language is "useful"? How useful will it be if you hate it? People study Latin and nobody even speaks it anymore! You should study the language you love. $%&#@! At least I have college...

/rant.

hannah, why did you want to take Spanish?

I wish that I had taken Russian, instead of French. My mother kept on discouraging me from it, though, even as an option while still taking French.

One language that I never really wanted to take was Spanish. I don't want to offend anyone actually taking Spanish, but it seemed like such a boring option. (Boring, as in "that's what everyone takes")
