I think sometimes we all feel like that. Just don't worry about it. If he didn't want to talk to you, he'd just go on as invisible and you would never even know he was there.
some people (like me) really hate starting IM convos. so we just sit there until someone talks to us. it's pathetic and lame, but that's just the way things are sometimes. if this person keeps talking to you and doesn't make excuses to leave all the time, chances are they enjoy it.
I have friends that I can never IM because they're always "away" when I see them online, unless they come on specifically wanting to talk to someone. And even when I message them when they're away, I never get a response.
So... I guess there's nothing to be done about that.
They probably like (or at least tolerate) talking to you, OP.
honestly.. not all ppl get on aim to talk.. just just sign on automatically when they get to the computer and then proceed to do other stuff (like hw)
so just cuz they're online and on aim doesn't mean they want to talk to anyone
