advice on the driving test: dont go to the one in cary cuz htey're anal. follow the speed limit and stop way before the stop signs and the stop lights. and dont speed. and if you do go to the one in cary stop completely on the train tracks. its really not bad. i failed the first time cuz they were dumb. and i wanst even a bad driving
^ dont pay attention to them. the one in cary is probably the best you can do. i did mine with them, and my test was done entirely on quiet back streets of cary's older neighborhoods.
their advice about being a conservative driver is good. drive very carefully, as though you had your grandmother in the back seet. just make sure you stay legal (less than the speed limit, but no slower than 10 mph under it). the worst thing you can do is roll through a stop sign, or go around a corner too quickly.
one fun thing to do is chat up the officer. not necessarily over-friendly, but be polite and candid. the more you're at ease, the more they're likely to be comfortable.
essentially - give the dmv officer no reason to feel uncomfortable about approving your license, and you'll be fine :)
i did mine at cary too and it wasn't all that bad. Oh, and don't stop completely at the rail tracks, because that is what I did and he practically yelled at me saying that I would get hit from behind if I did that (I still passed). Just slow down enough to look both ways
Sounds like every test is different.
I failed my first one (see incredibly angsty Tangst post at beginning of summer) because I almost made a left turn at a green light where I didn't have right of way... and an 18-wheeler did. That was a stupid mistake. Avoid those.
Don't chat up the tester if you're nervous-- chances are, you'll be focused too much on trying to act calm by talking and miss something on the road. It'll be okay. And don't worry about where you take it, they've all got their pros and cons from what I hear. You're not going to be on any highways wherever you are.
BUT. But but but. One thing to avoid: Get to the DMV early in the day. I got there at lunch time. That's when everybody gets there, and that's when half the staff's out on lunch break. The lines are incredible, like something out of Dante. Get there early and avoid that mess, it can only make things smoother and less hectic.
if you go to the cary one, get there before 3 o'clock, since that's when cary hs gets out. if you're there before 3, there's basically never more than one person in front of you in line.
You can make appointments with the DMV. You call the one you want to go to, set up the date and time (they fill up in advance), and show up. You cut to the front of the line. You wait for a different number to be called; in my case, mine started with H instead of A. You go. You're done. You get your photo taken, and then you lament how awful it looks.
And then it's over.
A much better way to do things.
I went to the DMV at Avent Ferry, and found them to be quite nice.
Avoid the one on Capital Boulevard, though. They're nasty.
The driving test is so easy i had not driven at all since i took drivers ed until about 2 days before i took the actual driving test and i still passed it easily.
In my experience, the DMV appointments are actually meaningless... that was an unpleasant discovery on avent ferry.
But there wasn't a line anyway.
