I hate it when people claim they hate the Harry Potter books. I'm not the kind of fanatic who dresses up and watches the movies over and over, but I do think that they are good books and you should at least read them before deciding that you are and individual and therefore will not like them. You probably couldn't concentrate, anyway.

Why read the series if we can't even trudge through the mediocre plot lines long enough to actually become interested?

And attention span has nothing to do with it. Who wants to have an attention span for something that's obviously a waste of time? Have fun reading it if that's what you enjoy, but don't make judgements about people who don't just because they aren't like you.

Haha come on now, I mean, I enjoy those books but you can't just make blatant statements about them. They aren't exactly intellectually challenging or interesting, they're just a fun read.

I've read all of them and will read the rest of them. My problem with the Harry Potter series is the lack of excellence. In 5th grade, they were good. Clear archetypes, interesting characters, easy plot devices that grab the attention.

Now there are better things to read, like the books for 11th grade english. They actually have theme, and timeless qualities, and intricate structure.

To me it's like this. You have a choice between mushy baby food, or like a fried chicken dinner with apple pie. Both give you all the nutrients (i.e. are intrinsically okay as food) but obviously one tastes better. If you were given the baby food, you'd spit it out. You'd be sad

Harry Potter: sad

I'll take the apple pie any day, but the minute I find worms in it, my taste is turned slightly against any future attempts by the cook.

I like the HP books as books, and I enjoy the influx of literary techniques not seen in the previous releases, but at times it seems as though her editors aren't quite earning their paychecks.

Have you actually read the newer books to see the mistakes in simple grammatical structure and spelling? Especially with the newest release. We waited what, two years for that book? I was very suprised to run across as many syntactical issues as I did.

That all being said, I like the books for what they are - stories. They're great for those times when there's nothing to do but escape to a fantasy world so separate from our own.
