Vista works, and it's the default choice for most computer vendors today.

However, my recommendation, after having tested the performance and battery life of the various operating systems available for PC's (Linux, Vista, and XP), is that you acquire a copy of Windows XP, or request it be installed on your laptop by default.

Windows XP runs more efficiently, and requires less hard drive space, leaving more for music, movies, etc (which comes at a relative premium on laptops).

Additionally, Windows XP consumes less battery power, with less system resources required for operation; one laptop I tested had almost an hour of battery time cut when using Vista vs. XP.

These are just a couple of examples. If you want to talk to me more about the topic, catch me on IM or email me at eckertd@gmail.com.
