i see all my friends hook up and talk about their angsty love life but i feel like that person who is just the friend. so far it hasn't paid off.

Is there anything wrong? Just because it's different doesn't make it bad.
Just hang in there, it'll happen sometime.
If you hitting your mid to late thirties and haven't had a relationship, then I'd start worrying about the "wrong" thing.
