I would say the opposite is true-- lesbians are more accepted by far.

To Anon1: Women don't watch gay porn per se, but have you hopped on any Harry Potter fansites recently? Straight girls like watching young wizard boys get it on with each other just as much as straight guys like watching lesbian porn.

I kinda see what you mean, OP. It's not quite that society is more accepting of gay men, but that gay men get a lot more of the spotlight than gay women. When people talk about gay rights, whether it's in a positive or negative manner, they usually use guys as an example, not girls. It's because gay men are more shocking, polarizing, and action-demanding than gay women.

In our society, it's become fairly acceptable for a woman to act "like a man" by working, having a successful career, or managing her family's finances. It's not as acceptable for a man to act "like a woman" by staying home, cooking, taking care of children, etc. Of course, it's a complete misconception to think that all gay men really want to be women and all gay women really want to be men, but the common perception of gays is that lesbians are butch and gay guys are effeminate. An effeminate guy has a lot more stigma than a tomboyish girl. Thus, a lesbian's fight for equal treatment does not resonate as well with an audience as a gay man's fight for equal treatment, since the lesbian already has an advantage.

If you're a religious activist encouraging people to renounce homosexuality, you're far more likely to focus on men than on women. I've read tons of Jack Chick tracts on the horrors of gayness, and not one of them dwells on lesbians. People tend to think of gay guys as more perverse, more pernicious than lesbians, mostly because of the difference in plumbing. The idea is that a horny gay man will rape anything he sees (a thoroughly stupid idea), while the same idea doesn't apply very well to lesbians. Lesbian sex doesn't usually involve any kind of penetration, which is necessary for rape-- I mean, what's a lesbian predator gonna do, forcibly orally pleasure a defenseless stranger? Because gay guys are thought by anti-gays to be gross, flamboyant perversions of nature, the pro-gay side of the argument spends a lot more time trying to dispell myths about gay guys than it spends promoting acceptance of the already-not-under-as-much-attack gay women. Because there is a more active effort to spread acceptance of gay men, I can see how sometimes it may seem like there's less acceptance of gay women.

So, while lesbians have more initial acceptance--the Bible only rails against gay men, not women, after all--they miss out on much of the acceptance-efforts by pro-gay communities and organizations since the public eye is more drawn to gay men.
