Apart from the possible sexual aspect, what separates romantic love from platonic love? As noted by someone else, "It seems like much of the stuff separating being 'in love' from friendship does friendship a disservice." In other words, the assumption exists that romantic love trumps strong friendship, which I don't think is always the case.
I know that Tangst seems to be fairly inactive at the moment, but if anyone has any thoughts on the matter, I'm game.

I think in platonic love it is easier to respect the other person's differences from yourself and still enjoy the relationship. In romantic love too often the differences feel like a betrayal. In other words, there seems to be more space allowed with friends to be themselves.
Jealousy between lovers is reasonable whereas between friends it is weird and unacceptable. I think the monogamy aspect is important.
I agree that love doesn't necessarily trump friendship. I've been a lot happier and sometimes more open with my friends than with my lovers for sure.
Friends last, significant others usually don't.
