I had previously believed that, by law, in order to see an R-rated movie unaccompanied by an adult, one must be at least seventeen years of age. I am seventeen years of age, as is my friend. We decided to celebrate being seventeen by going to see our first in-theater, unaccompanied, R-rated movie together (it was Brokeback Mountain, for the more curious among you.) My friend was sold a ticket without question, wheras I, arriving later, was asked my age and denied a ticket because I was under eighteen. A long debate followed where a lot of people got very flustered and the result was that neither of us got to see our gay cowboys.
I hate North Carolina law.

Most of the theatres are cracking down on the R rated thing, I really despise it. If you go to Mission Valley Cinema they never check cause no one cares. If you go anywhere else just don't arouse suspicion and buy tickets to another movie and then sneak in.
Um, I was under the impression that this was not law but rather a Good Idea (TM) that makes movie theatres money from conservative lobbyists. Can we check this out?

Weird. I've never been carded for that, and I'm seventeen...are you sure the law says eighteen?
If anyone can find out actual information about NC ratings... All I'm getting is NC-17, which isn't what I'm going for. Heh.
Also, that just pisses me off. I should be 17 by the time it comes out at Blue Ridge though...
There are laws regulating movies. Contrary to popular belief, PG-13 has no restriction on it, it's just telling parents that perhaps they shouldn't let their kids see the movie if they're under 13. R and NC-17 are the only ratings (well...besides X of course, but you don't see those in theatres) that have restrictions placed on them. R is technically you have to be 17 or older without an accompanying adult, but you can if you have said adult. NC-17 says that you HAVE to be 17 or older to see it reguardless.
That said, theatres are private companies and they can do whatever the hell they want, so if they say it's 18, then it's 18. I suspect this is becasue of tinted's reasoning, but I could be wrong.
This is just my understanding, so if anyone wants to correct me go ahead.
