I always feel guilty whenever I hit the refresh button - or when I post - because I know that makes it seem like Tangst has more traffic than it really does.

Post anything that you want - a story, a secret, a confession, a fear, a love - anything. Post twice if you'd like. And then share the site with your friends.

You'd be surprised at how much traffic Tangst actually gets. Besides, box box records the hits, and does so (I believe) by recording individual IP addresses, aka, hitting refresh doesn't do anything.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
I do a bit of both, actually. Individual IP address statistics help show the spread of the site, and raw hits are recorded for traffic analysis.
There is a certain alogarithm in the raw traffic meter to prevent things like quick refreshes from appearing too often, so don't worry too much.
That being said, someone who camps on the front page refreshing every 10 minutes all night will affect the traffic count ;-)
