This summer is very difficult for me. First of all, it sucks pretty badly living at home again after being independent for a year, an issue that many of you can probably relate to. Secondly, my boyfriend lives in the town I went to college in, only 2 hours away but still difficult to see each other what with clashing work schedules and all. I miss him. Thirdly, I've spent the last 3 summers of my 4 years in NC with who is now my ex boyfriend, so it's just kind of throwing me off. I don't remember what I did during summers before him. There's so much time to fill. My mom is pushing me to get back together with him, because she likes him a lot. So this is making me angry, on top of that, I guess my mom isn't used to not mothering someone so she turned to MY dog to baby this year. So I come back home to her telling ME how to treat MY DOG. Explaining my feelings doesn't work with her either. Nothing works. Everything is irritating me and as much as I'm trying to have a positive attitude, the people around me just keep rubbing me the wrong way and pushing me until I feel like erupting in anger and harsh words. Just the pile up of things. Grr. Thank you for letting me vent.

When I was little and I couldn't sleep, my mom would rub my back while telling me the names of all the people who loved me. She would fill a whole hour like that sometimes, exhausting nuclear family members, then household pets, then distant cousins, then teachers and friends from school, and occasionally (but rarely) falling back on Jesus and God. I think sometimes I faked nightmares just so she would do that with me.
I'm twenty now, and I'm in college far away from home. I'm a big girl who does her own laundry and has a discount card for the local grocery store and always remembers to sort the recyclables. I know I need to learn to be an adult, but all I want right now is for my mom to sit on the side of my bed and rub my back and tell me the names of all the people who love me.

I just found out that my parents smoke weed. I found their bowl while looking for toothpaste in their bathroom.
And I mean, it's not the worst thing ever. I kinda laughed when I realized what it was that I found, but seriously, it kinda sucks. Come on, mom and dad, I don't smoke weed. I've stayed away from illegal drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, partially for my own good but mostly for you guys. And then you go and do this? What the hell?
Maybe I'm just feeling like the biggest prude ever-- all my friends enjoy the responsible underage drink on occasion, I know plenty of people who smoke weed at school, but it always seemed at least sort of okay for me to have my fun in ways that weren't drug-induced. It didn't make me weird or a societal tool. But then, my parents, man! They're the biggest moral compass I have in my life, and I find out their needle isn't pointing the same way I'm walking. What the hell does that mean?
I'm probably making too big a deal of this. It's just... I'm disappointed in my parents. I thought they were different.

I miss seeing my sister every day. It's lonely at home without her. I find myself crying when I think about her because I miss her so much, but I can't bring myself to talk to her through any means because I feel too awkward and that I could burst into tears at any moment.
It's only the fifth week. What will it be like in the years to come?

I've always been close with my mom. She's always shared her problems with me and I of course have confided in her too (even when I don't plan to). But now, with all this crap happening in my family, the time when we need each other the most, I can't be there for her. I've purposely detached myself in order not to get sucked in and completely stressed out. I'm scared of her problems. I'm scared of feeling what she's feeling. I don't really know what to do. I wish I could just run away and have it be better. But that wouldn't help her much, would it?

my moms making a big deal about graduation, inviting all my relatives family friends and everyone I've ever met. I really wish she wouldn't and I've told her so but she just keeps planning. It is really quite bothersome. extended family really annoys me at least if I'm expected to make idle chitchat. So what are you people doing after graduation?

I love my parents to death, but I'm so angry at them for never teaching me to speak, read, and write proper [insert my first language]. I tell people I'm fluent because I would be ashamed to know any less. I mean, it's not completely FALSE. I can listen to pretty much everything (except some super "intellectual" stuff because of the vocabulary, but I think that's pretty normal in all languages, even English) and speak very well, but not as good as I wish I was. I wish I could say that I was fluent and meant it from the bottom of my heart. But I know it's not too late.

My parents divorced when I was 8 and I have had an awkward living situation with both of them since then. I have to pack my stuff and alternate houses every two weeks.
It's an okay arrangement, I guess.
But I've never felt like I had a home, and since I have never lived with either of my parents for a long period of time, it never felt like they were parents to me. I had to mostly take care of myself.
I mean, I've been doing my own laundry since I was 8. What 8-year-old does laundry?
I'm used to it now, but I just feel like I was established as an adult way early, and I really wish I had been mothered at some point when I needed it because I never was.
Actually, I still want to be mothered.
I've heard it's a nice feeling.

My dad does the family's laundry every week (washing it together saves water and time). When he sorts it to give back to us, I get a lot of my brother's shirts and my mom's underwear. It makes me feel ugly and weird even though it's only a little problem.

You have two seperate houses. Two places you are expected to call home. Two sets of rules and responsabilities, two rooms to clean...
Every week packing a suitcase and living out of it. Keeping a closet in a bag and all your favortie toys get left behind. Dividing them up. Leaving it all behind.
Living two seperate lives. Two lies, in which you pretend like you were never the child of your parents, just so you don't have to remind your mother, your father of what a mistake it all was.
Imagine not being able to talk to one parent about the problems of another, not being able to ask permission to go out to buy birthday presents, mother's day, father's day. Not being able to mention the name of the other or love for the other without the yelling starting. The anger. The throwing things. Almost as bad as before they were divorced.
Your parents running around with weekly girlfriends or boyfriends like kids at school. Imagine parents being children. Imagine the holes punched in the wall and the tight money and the guilt.
Imagine parents fighting over who gets custody on holidays that should be times of togetherness.
Imagine being seven years old and watching your mother throw all the ornaments into the fire christmas morning because they reminded her of your father. Imagine waking up in the middle of the night to her crying.
Image how scared you'd be.
You're seven years old.
I was seven years old.

The girl you see on the outside is just a shell. Sure- I'm the girl who looks for the good in things. I'm the girl who's never pessimistic. See whatever you want. But the girl on the inside is in agony. She feels cold and morose. She longs to seclude herself from the world around her. She need to dwell on what has happened to her family and to herself. She misses how things used to be and hates the way I have become. I only see this girl whenever I look at a mirror. Or a photograph. Or a friendly face.
I hate my past. And she hates me.
I also miss her, I think that's why I keep her around. She keeps me company. I'm afraid to let her go.
I try to keep my chin up, but the rain keeps getting in my eyes.

Part of me wishes that my family would have stayed in the States.
I love my country... Incredibly beautiful, friendly, fairly open minded...
And yet even as I'm about to graduate (with decent/mediocre marks), i curse the substandard education i received here.
Lotsa love from the Great White North.
