that box is pissing me off a lot right now. it needs to have an "i don't know" option.
That's what the "It's Complicated" option is for.

yea so what if you're in a relationship that you think is complicated. and they dont think it is. so it would be akward if you put it as complicated under facebook. then they would ask you about it and that makes it even more complicated.

i wish i could change it too. but in a different way than i think the op was referring to.
They need to have "Single but taken" and "Don't even think about it"
